Reading all the reviews I held off getting nwn2 until the price came way down and it had as many patches as possible. This feedback is based upon my daughter finishing nwn2 and I'm about half way through.

We love nwn1 and play it all the time. Nwn2 is a bit more linear in the story, but that has not been too bad. In nwn1 it felt like I was exploring a world AND solving problems, where in nwn2 it follows more of a script of what has to be done next to solve problems. I liked the nwn1 exploration because I could pick the order to do things and hence find weapons, amour and artifacts in the order I wanted to get them - to maximize my character's abilities. This gave nwn1 a lot of replayability where I don't see it, yet, in nwn2.

The consistent fix, so far, was to back off the nwn2 resolution one step so from the game maximum x to x Navigating, moving the characters around, is the worst part of the game not a big problem in nwn1. Having a better GPU also made navigating with the mouse a bit more predictable and less jumpy.

However, I feel my ability to play the game for any length of time is limited by the "effort" to keep the navigation under control. I get tired of that effort before I tire of the game. If you really liked nwn1, as we did, then I believe you would like nwn2 well enough -- for this price -- to put up with the jumpy navigation, assuming you don't have graphic card problems you can't solve.

So you may want to play with the graphics settings util your navigation is playable the graphics options give hints which settings will improve performance while reducing screen detail, so not as nice looking. If it is hard to get to a playable configuration, your graphics card may simply not be up to the task our GeForce and Radeon were not up to it. I'm still working through the original nwn2 portion.

This was a very fun game overall. It has a great story, it was cheap to buy, you have a lot of great character customization, and as far as these semi-strategy type RPGs go it has decent gameplay. Unfortunately, it was clearly very rushed in production. The graphics are rather terrible, but it manages to run very poorly with high system requirements at the same time due to a near absence of any optimization. It is also -riddled- with bugs.

I didn't encounter anything game-breaking or any program crashes or anything like that, but a lot of abilities and spells do not work the way they were intended, the assignment of actions in combat is extremely finicky and can do things like consume your action for the turn without actually doing anything, and it is extremely clumsy and twitchy when switching up your current action; even movement can easily get botched up when you try doing something else at the same time.

Combat is also more shallow looking than the original Neverwinter Nights, because they removed target linking, wherein the your character and the target you currently have assigned to attack would link their animations and kind of stick to each other.

They also changed attacks, so that instead of performing every attack of the round in sequence immediately they are spread throughout the round. The problem with this is that the attacks are both slower and constrained by time, so that if you get more than a few attacks per round the rest will not even animate; the target just starts taking multiple sets of damage from a single swing.

It also means that if you decide to use a quick action mid-round, you lose the rest of your attacks for that round. Using something like a Quickened spell at the very start of a round can cause you to lose all attacks for that round.

Even queueing up another action mid-round to be used the next round will cause you to lose your remaining attacks. All of this causes the character controls and combat as a whole to feel more clumsy than any other game I have ever played, literally. Character faces and hair are all extremely ugly as well.

Females have some passable options, but male characters are fairly screwed. But again, unfortunately, there are bugs in the main campaign as well. Nothing game-breaking as I said, but certain obscure actions can, for example, break a side quest so that it can no longer be done. As one example, when working on your personal keep, if you send your soldiers on a mission, then try to change up their regular scheduled activities in any way while they are absent, they will never return and you will not be able to send them on another mission, ever.

The strength of this game though is not in the gameplay, it's in the story and character customization. These are the heart of any RPG, and they are extremely solid in this title.
